Roosimine is an Estonian inlay technique that creates the appearance of embroidery through intentional floats in contrasting yarn on the right side of your knitting. It’s the perfect technique to add some embellishment to your knitting that is easier than intarsia. The name Roosimine translates to “decorating with roses”, which comes from a style of short stitch embroidery done on the Estonian island of Muhu. Students will knit a small swatch.

SKILL LEVEL: advanced beginner / intermediate knitter; students should be comfortable to knit and purl in the round, cast-on, bind -off

Includes Tarndwancoort 40gm Polwarth 8ply / DK yarn. (MC - 20gm, CC1 - 10gm, CC2 - 10gm)

Materials needed:

• 4mm / US 6 needles for knitting small circumference (Double pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop)

• Stitch markers

• Tapestry / darning needle

About your tutor.

Aleks Byrd is a knitwear designer with roots in Estonia, Canada, and the USA. She creates modern patterns with a connection to the past using little-known traditional techniques with a fresh twist on them for unique wearable designs that are fun and rewarding to knit for all levels of knitters. In addition to knitwear design, she works as an illustrator and teaches Estonian knitting techniques around the world. Her latest book Traditions Revisited – Modern Estonian Knits brings together her designs and teaching as introduction to Estonian knitting, both traditional and traditional-inspired.

About the venue.

The workshop will take place in the 1878 Dining Room of heritage listed Tarndwarncoort Homestead - a place of wool from source to textile for 183 years. The original features of the room, matched with task lighting, comfortable seating and an open wood fire make for a rare experience. A tea and coffee station and break out room will keep you refreshed.
